THE TWELVE-HUNDREDTH PIECE OF WRITING THIS YEAR (November 11, 2012)
Not counting this one, today I have written five pieces. And I posted the first four on my Residua website without any difficulty. They appear in the listing of pieces written this year just like all the others written before. But the last one does not. I posted it without any problem, and it can be found by searching the World Wide Web, but it does not show up in the listing. I erased and posted it again, but it would not appear in the listing once again. At first I was pretty confused about the unexpected problem, but then I realized that the fifth piece must be the twelve-hundredth written this year. I checked my records, and this was indeed the case. The listing must be limited to less than twelve-hundred pieces, which was fine so far. I immediately wrote to Paul Bazay, who manages my site from Calgary, Canada, but he seems not to be available. As luck would have it, it is weekend. My all-time record of more than twelve-hundred pieces written in a single year will thus have to wait a while longer to be trumpeted to all and sundry. Now, the funniest thing here is that it took me almost an hour to remember that the same thing had happened to me around this time last year (“The One-Thousandth Piece of Writing This Year,” November 13, 2011). As of late, records are piling up like crazy. The limit will have to be reset once again. Poor Paul with silly old me.
Addendum I (November 12, 2012)
When will my website be fixed? It is anyone’s guess, of course. Going by the last year’s experience with the same sort of problem, it will be around the end of the month (“Fixed at Last,” November 28, 2011). Which brings me to cursing our civilization once again. And much more besides. So, fuck computers. Fuck software. Fuck electronics. Fuck the World Wide Web. Fuck electricity. Fuck engineering. Fuck science. Fuck knowledge. Fuck progress. Fuck the human species. Fuck life on earth. Fuck the solar system. Fuck the universe. Have I forgotten anything? Yes, fuck myself.
Addendum II (November 19, 2012)
Amazingly, Paul is not responding to my anxious messages. And it is eight days into the misery already. The listing of pieces written this year ends with the piece about Obama and Florida. Although all the pieces written afterwards can be accessed by pressing the “next” button, the number of visits to my websites has been steadily dropping every since November 11. The Google Analytics chart showing the drop gives me a good idea how the visits to my site will dwindle after my death. The smoothness of the decline is impressive in its own right. Gentle, gentle death…
Addendum III (November 24, 2012)
It is over at long last. The listing is now full again. To my surprise, I have produced more than fifty pieces of writing over a bit less than two weeks. Now everything is in the open, too. The most important thing is that the problem with my website has not slowed me down. Quite the opposite, as a matter of fact. I kept going as though there was no tomorrow. As Paul tells me, my limit is now set at fourteen-hundred pieces. I sincerely hope never to come even close to that number of pieces written in a single year. At about thirteen-hundred pieces by the end of the year, let this year remain the record of all times. And let the future be dedicated to better things. Amen!
Addendum IV (December 15, 2012)
The limit of fourteen-hundred pieces struck me as more than ample less than a month ago. Things have changed, though. There is only a fortnight to go till the end of the year, but I have no more than forty-one piece left to write. That is the last count. Given all the givens, asking Paul to jack up the limit once again would be crazy at this stage. Put differently, I will have to slow down. The pieces that are not sensitive to dates can be put on hold until next year, but it is clearly the best of times for addenda. All things considered, this is a welcome turn of events, for I am rather short on addenda in spite of all my records this year. Which also means that I will have to turn to reading my magnum opus a bit more diligently. Writing addenda for the sake of addenda would be ludicrous, for they are the precious glue that holds my writings together.
