THE SO-CALLED MAYAN PROPHECY (December 11, 2012)

The World Wide Web is pulsating with the news of the end of the world on December 21, 2012. Supposedly, the ancient Maya predicted it long ago. However, the so-called Mayan prophecy is based on the misinterpretation of the Mayan calendar. Its longest cycle, measuring five-thousand one-hundred and twenty-five years is coming to an end in ten days. It is but a cycle that repeats itself endlessly, though. The same holds for all the other cycles in the Mayan calendar, of which there are many. Although the ancient Maya believed they had to give appropriate offerings to their gods to make sure the next cycle would come along, they made sure such offerings were given in time. If the Mayan prophecy is so popular around the globe at this juncture, how come no-one is even mentioning the offerings appropriate for the longest cycle? Given the status of this cycle, the offerings would have to be tremendous. As it turns out, the only offering our civilization is capable of is anxiety. And tremendous it surely is in this case. Hooked on apocalyptic prophecies of all sorts, people all around the world are preparing for the worst. If anything else, the World Wide Web is an admirable mirror of the human mind. And prophecy prone it surely is.
