THE PAPER PERFORATION STANDARD (August 13, 2012)
Nearly all bills I get in Croatia are of the same form: the payment slip is attached to the page stating the expenses due. The payment slip is divided in two parts: one stays with the post office, where I pay my bills, and the other is a receipt. Once I pay whatever is due, I staple the receipt to the page stating the expenses due. Over the years, I have collected a huge pile of the above. Anyhow, it is amazing that I am still struggling with every single bill because the perforation between the payment slip and the page stating the expenses due is very poorly made. No matter how careful I am, the two tear apart in the strangest of ways. To wit, Croatians are yet to learn how to produce paper perforations that work as intended. If I were asked to set a standard for the country’s overall development, I would go for paper perforation. And if I were asked when Croatians would be likely to master paper perforation worthy of its name, I would give them between ten and twenty years. It is a tough standard, it goes without saying. In the meanwhile, I will keep struggling with every single bill.
