Before moving to Istria, I was convinced that I would eventually spend a lot of time investigating my ancestry, and especially the family branches associated with women. Here I have in mind the Massalin family from Plomin to which I am related through one of my father’s grandmothers; the Širola family from Klana to which I am related through my father’s mother; the Flego family from Štrped close to Buzet to which I am related through my mother’s father; and the Gržinić family in Hum to which I am related through my mother’s mother. Of course, I was also interested in the Bon family from Lazi close to Motovun to which I must be be related; and all the branches of the Bon family from the island of Cres to which I must be related, as well. Nothing has come of it, though. Having moved to Motovun, I lost interest in my ancestry. But I have developed an enlightened attitude toward all those who bear the above family names or who hail from any of the above places: I call them cousins one and all. Given how tiny Istria happens to be, we must be related in one way or another. So, why bother with the family tree?
