As of late, leading Croatian newspapers are reporting that a growing number of people wishes to leave the country, as well as that a growing number of them is actually doing so. Apparently, more than ten-thousand people have left the country each year for the last three years in a row. They are voting with their feet, but Croatian politicians do not seem to worry about the exodus. If the best and the brightest are going away, as is usually the case with economic emigration, the politicians will only have an easier job in the years to come. I only wonder what will happen with those who stay behind. To begin with, they will indeed become an easier prey for politicians. As a consequence, though, the politicians will become an easier prey for them, as well. The downward spiral is frightening enough, and it cannot but encourage further emigration, economic or otherwise. By and by, I am liable to be the last inhabitant of Motovun. By then, I will surely be the mayor, too. The worst and the dumbest will undoubtedly win!
