THE DEVIL YOU KNOW (November 1, 2012)
This evening I bumped into an American tourist in one of Motovun’s cafés, and we started chatting about Croatia and the States. Less than ten years my junior, he was on the affable side. Thus I asked him which way he would vote next week. As it turned out, it was Barack Obama. “The devil you know,” he laughed. When I returned home soon afterwards, I discovered that The Economist had endorsed Obama, as well. To my surprise, the mighty newspaper’s argument was essentially the same. “The devil you know,” they put it blankly, and in their main leader. Forever fumbling and stumbling, Mitt Romney struck them as too much of “the devil you don’t know.” Having read the main leader in its entirety, I nodded in agreement. I was much more enthusiastic four years ago, but I would still endorse Obama. After all, the American president is destined to have a greater impact in Europe than any European politician. Ditto for fumbling and stumbling Croatia, it goes without saying.
