THE CAR (March 18, 2012)

Not a day passes without the news of some horrible car accident. The pictures that come with the news are pretty similar. The articles accompanying them are all alike, as well. This driver fell asleep. The other was drunk out of his mind. The weather was to blame in quite a number of cases. But I have not seen a single article about the car itself as the reason for so many senseless deaths. Or the highway, its merry playground. The entire technology surrounding the car is idiotic, though. To put it simply, too much is up to the insolent ape behind the steering wheel. Originally, the car was a mere toy of the few. Hardly anyone cared if they swerved off the unpaved road and smashed into a tree. Today, the toy is in the hands of the many. They are dying left and right in ever-greater numbers. And yet, the car, the road, the traffic lights, the traffic signs, and the laws regulating the whole rigmarole are as good as untouchable. The idiotic technology is no less than sacrosanct. Which is the only reason why so many people still perish on the road. And without any fear of the car and everything else that comes along with it. What is worse, that murderous contraption is the pride of most. The more expensive it happens to be, the better. Anyhow, the only reason for going on and on about the car is that it offers a perfect illustration of the deranged world in which we live. Only imagine telling people to give up their cherished car!
