THE ACCIDENT (August 28, 2012)

I will be returning to Motovun this afternoon. The bus to Umag on the western coast of Istria will be departing in a few hours from the central bus station in Zagreb. As I was just checking the news on the World Wide Web, though, I came across an accident on the main Croatian highway, which connects the capital and the coast. A car with Albanian license plates mysteriously swerved off the road this morning, bounced off the railing, rolled in the middle of the road for a while, and then burst into flames. The car was reduced to cinders. A couple of people died on the spot and several were badly hurt. The bit that caught my attention was that the highway was closed for police investigation. I immediately searched the place where the accident happened to see whether my bus would have to take a detour, which would prolong my trip for a few hours. As it turned out, I was safe and sound. The section of the highway the bus would take was not affected. This determined, I felt the first pangs of conscience. All I care about is myself. The poor people affected are farthest from my callous mind. And so on. It took me a while to come up with a reasonable defense. If the situation would be reversed, the very same people could not care less about my plight. They would only think about their own trip and delays they could encounter on their way. Be that as it may, some pangs of conscience still linger.
