STONE, BREAD (February 26, 2012)
I just had a vision of a photograph that could well go by the name of art. I saw Motovun captured from some distance and a gargantuan loaf of bread hanging just above it. For good measure, the loaf should be about twice the size of the hilltown. But the title of the photograph would be the clincher: “If someone throws a stone at you, throw a loaf of bread back.” This Christian proverb smacks of the holy book, and so it will sit well with the devout Motovun community. All that remains to be done is to find an art photographer of renown to complete the humorous project.
Addendum (February 29, 2012)
I have written to Eni Nurkollari twice, but there has been no reply from him yet. Now he lives in Pristina or Prizren in Kosovo, and we are hardly in touch any longer. Having worked with him on my book about Motovun’s history, I first thought of him. Other art photographers are always welcome, though. But my piece is good enough as it is. A hundred words are always better than a picture, anyhow. That gargantuan loaf of bread hanging just above the hilltown is best left to the reader’s imagination.
