RUNNING IN PARALLEL (December 21, 2012)
This morning a dog peed across the street from my beloved’s apartment. There is a puddle by the wall of the building and two thin lines that run all the way across the pavement and into the gutter. As I watch from one of the apartment windows, many wonderful things take place, and in quick succession. Most people step across the two lines without even looking at the pavement. The lines can be spotted from quite some distance, that is. If anyone ever steps into the pee, it is a young woman forever casting her guarded gaze farther afield. Pee, what pee? But it is wonderful to watch dogs that come along, and especially those on long leashes. They can smell something of real interest from quite some distance. Excited, they dash ahead. Once they are close, they go for the puddle at once. There is no end to their sniffing. And then they follow the two lines all the way to the gutter. If their owners would let them, they would stay around much longer. As well as add a puddle all their own, no doubt. Chances permitting, there would be many lines of pee running across the pavement. By the evening, there would be tens or even hundreds of them running in parallel. Dogs from all over would be bounding toward the sniffing feast. Ah, heavenly pee!
