QAWALI IN A CAB (February 5, 2012)
“You know we’re moving on from 9/11 when you’ve heard Qawali in a cab three times in one week,” writes my No. 1 son from New York City. “Any Arab-sounding music stopped dead until recently.” And then he closes his mobile-phone text-message: “Cabs used to be such a treasure!” He shares my love of music from places far away, such as Qawali or Qawwali, the Sufi devotional music from Pakistan and several neighboring countries. Of course, I am especially happy that America is moving on from September 11. It was high time, too. The only trouble with his delightful message, which was evidently sent from a cab, is that it reached me around two o’clock in the morning. I must let him know that I use my mobile phone as an alarm clock.
