PROUST, SAMSONITE (July 5, 2012)
What do Proust and Samsonite have in common? Well, quite a bit more than I would ever have suspected. I got a copy of Proust’s masterpiece from my beloved only a couple of days ago (“Proust Forever,” July 3, 2012). The soft-cover book would not last long in my knapsack, I realized at once. Printed on thin paper, it would get maimed in no time. Today I looked for thick pouches designed for compact computers of this day and age. And I found none that fit the hefty volume, not even in the well-stocked Apple store in the center of the Croatian capital. Quite by chance, I went into a store with all sorts of luggage. After a long search, I came up with a snug and sturdy foam-rubber pouch made by Samsonite. Over the years, I have had a good experience with the company. Although the pouch cost about as much as the book itself, I went for it without a further thought. Now I can carry the book wherever I go. Proust forever, indeed. But with a tender touch by trusted Samsonite.
