PROFESSOR EMERITUS (February 20, 2012)

I dreamt that I became professor emeritus at MIT. The negotiations over, I felt quite content with my achievement. Under the circumstances, I managed to get the best deal that was available. I do not remember the details, but I got the largest amount of money for the least amount of effort per year. And I was a tough negotiator. There was no kidding with me, and I felt proud of myself. When I woke up, and I woke up in the middle of the night, I marveled at my dream. I kept marveling at it all the way through the morning, too. In fact, it felt like someone else’s. The tough negotiator from my dream has nothing whatsoever to do with me. I have never negotiated with my academic employers, let alone been good at negotiation. As professor emeritus at Reading, I have no deal with the university, either. It is a mere title bereft of rights or duties.
