POST OFFICE BOX 20 (January 19, 2012)

Beside my house, one of my remaining Motovun links is my box in the post office. Post Office Box 20, to be exact. While I am in Zagreb, and this stretches over most of the fall and winter, all my mail accumulates there. Once a month, Zvjezdana Flego, who works in the post office, sends me a package with all my mail. The package rarely brings any surprises. The bills are its most important part. And there are quite a number of them: Internet connection, mobile phone, electricity, water, garbage, communal services, and health insurance. On occasion I also get registered mail from the court in Pazin. By and by, this hilltown link is acquiring a sour taste. Bills, bills, bills. As for all the other links, they are fading away. As time goes by, Motovun is shrinking in my mind to the size of a post office box.
