ON FONTS (August 9, 2012)
I came across a lengthy essay on fonts in The New York Times this morning. Apparently, fonts affect the seriousness with which readers take an argument. The more informal the font, the less serious the uptake. Interestingly, I immediately thought of my Residua website. When it was designed in 1999 and 2000, I immediately went for Times as the font of choice. At the time, it struck me as rather formal, which would mean that I wanted my arguments to be taken seriously. But my next thought this morning started worrying ma a bit. Namely, I considered switching from Times to an even more formal font so as to impress my readers as much as possible. I recoiled in horror at once, though. If Times is not formal enough for my readers, so be it. They can always switch to fonts of their choice as they navigate through my website. After all, the seriousness with which they take my arguments is entirely up to them.
