NEVER WORK, NEVER (April 26, 2012)
Thus a hastily scrawled sign on a recently painted building in the middle of the Croatian capital. And in English. The Anarchist symbol is daubed even more hastily underneath the sign. Quite a message, this. I was drawn to it at once. It fits my jolly retirement perfectly well. I am only sorry I have not spotted it in my youth, though. As a babyboomer, perhaps I could have pulled it off. My generation may have been the only one in history that could have offered the life of leisure to quite a few crafty ones. Ah, all those years wasted working in the world of plenty… But I wonder how much longer will this Anarchist rally against work make any sense. The world of plenty is in terminal decline. The welfare state is on its hind legs already. The recession following the last crazy boom threatens to turn into another depression. Besides, never say never, as the adage goes. Hunger can make you change your mind quickly enough, no matter how staunch an Anarchist you happen to be.
