NATURE, PEASANTS (September 6, 2012)

I just had a nice talk with Marko Fakin. He will harvest his vineyards within sight of his restaurant on the lower square over the coming weekend. Many wine growers around Motovun have harvested their vineyards already, but some are still waiting. Every day of sunshine is precious in their minds. He believes it is the right time to do it, though. And then he told me that the grapes long wrinkled and shrunken by the severe drought had turned plump again after the recent rains. I was delighted by the news. “Nature,” he commented with a broad smile. God knows what all this will do to the wine, but I am sure that local wine growers will find a solution soon enough. For they must. Chances are that the weather will keep changing in unprecedented ways, but they will eventually figure it out. This I trust. “Peasants,” I almost blurted out, but I bit my tongue just in time. The term is not appreciated in these parts. Actually, it is not appreciated anyplace in Croatia. Wrongly, too. For who in the world would remain to master all of nature’ shenanigans?
