MOTOVUN MINUS THE CRAP (September 11, 2012)
Today I made my last India ink drawing in the notebook that I am currently using, which is almost full by now. It is the fourth and definitely the most disappointing drawing in the notebook. It shows the Motovun hill denuded by drought with the medieval fortifications on top. A couple of rooftops peep behind the walls. The tower is there, too. There is a column of smoke rising from one of the houses, and there are several Cyprus trees where the cemetery already stands. All the rest is missing. The drawing is pretty bad, I repeat, but it has a promising title: “Motovun minus the crap.” In the note on the opposing page I wrote a few more things: “The smoke shows there is life there, and the cemetery shows that it goes on and on…” This is how Motovun must have looked before Borgo and Gradiziol were added, as well. By way of conclusion, I wrote the following: “A glorious future!” Motovun sailing into posthistory, of course. Who says I am not a dyed-in-the-wool optimist?!
