On my way home from the lower square, I just walked past a British couple looking into Renata Vrtarić’s Motovun Gallery on Borgo, where all sorts of souvenirs are on offer. Both of them pronounced the hilltown’s name written on some souvenirs as though the “u” is read the same way as in “sun” or “rum.” This is how English-speakers typically mispronounce it. Actually, the “u” should be pronounced as “oo” in “soon” or “room.” For the English-speakers, the name should be spelled as “Motovoon,” instead. As an added benefit, the emphasis would be placed on the vowel in question, where it is actually placed in Croatian. Of course, this rendering of the hilltown’s name would be mispronounced by the French-speakers or German-speakers, but English is the key language on earth at this very moment, and it thus makes sense to favor the English-speakers. Besides, the alternative spelling would look quite cute on souvenirs, many of which are kind of cute, anyhow. I must mention it to Renata, who could pass it on to the artists and artisans whose work she sells. Motovoon, anyone?
