LETTERS TO EDITORS (July 17, 2012)
Do I miss my letters to the editor of The Economist? A good question given that more than six months have passed since the last letter of this ilk. And a good question given the place these letters used to have in my writing. But the answer is straightforward: not the least bit. Even I am surprised, to tell the truth. In place of five or six letters to the mighty newspaper, now I write comments on titles and subtitles of articles in a variety of newspapers, including The Economist. I start with the title in quotes, and let it rip. The articles come from the Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Guardian, and so on. I do not even think of sending these rejoinders to the newspapers in question, though. I am especially happy about the fact that this new form of dealing with world affairs has not been premeditated at all. It appeared out of nowhere and filled the vacuum left by my letters to the editor, which used to go regularly enough to two other newspapers, as well: The Jackdaw and The Technology Review. By now, letters to editors are history. And all is fine.
