INTELLECTUAL AUSTERITY (June 19, 2012)
As of late, I am on an austerity program all my own. Having abandoned radio and television long ago, I have cut out all newspapers, as well. I have no more subscriptions to my name. Now I check the news by skimming through editions of major newspapers on the World Wide Web, but I limit myself to reading the titles and brief summaries only. More important, I am doing my best not to acquire new books. I limit myself to a few trusted ones in my library, which I trimmed quite severely before I left Reading. Having abandoned both the cinema and theater long ago, I have stopped going to galleries and museums, too. Well, Croatia has not too many worth visiting, anyhow. The best term for all this I can muster is something like “intellectual austerity.” Indeed, I am dying to see what, if anything, this poor brain of mine can come up with on its very own. Go brain, go!
