IN PRAISE OF CHESTNUT TREES (August 30, 2012)
I am sitting on the hotel terrace, sipping my drink, and staring into the screen of my laptop computer. Now the hotel has a wireless local area network, so I can surf the World Wide Web at will. Also, I can read and write electronic-mail messages. Most important, I can post my writings on my Residua website. All this was unimaginable only a few years ago. When I came to Motovun a decade ago, I used to sit on the hotel terrace and write into an old-fashioned notebook. Then I started writing into my mobile phone, which is always with me. My desktop computer at home was far, far away. Things have changed. I bring my laptop to the hotel terrace almost every afternoon. Several windows are open at any one time. Hey, I just remembered something when a shriveled leaf landed on the keyboard of my laptop. As of late, I spend very little time staring at the chestnut trees on the hotel terrace. The current drought has maimed them. Many leaves are yellow or brown already. It is time to turn off the laptop and pay attention to the world right around me. Thank you, chestnut trees!
