HOMO LUDENS TRIUMPHANT (September 21, 2012)

There is a short and pudgy young man across the isle from my bus seat. Sporting long hair and a short beard, he has enormous earphones on his head and two electronic gadgets in his hands. He clutches both of them as for dear life. One is a mobile phone, and the other is a music machine that doubles as a play station. He shifts the two gadgets from one hand to another every once in a while. He is right-handed. Now he is reading or writing a text message, and now he is playing a card game of some kind. I think it is solitaire, but I am not good enough at card games. The bus is full, but he does not look at his fellow passengers. Not once. The landscape out there is fabulous, but he pays it no attention whatsoever. Messages, music, games, and so on ad infinitum. Luckily for him, there are gadgets galore. The electronic industry provides for his generation more than well. And the many gadgets are all designed for people who are forever alone but never alone for true. Homo ludens triumphant at long last.
