HEARING BEATS SEEING (November 6, 2012)
The music I listen to has nothing to do with music. At least to the people making it, that is. They are just singing, drumming, strumming, and clapping their hands. Nothing to it at all. Music as such is farthest from their minds. Luckily for us, much of this attitude survives to this day. Would that it was the same with the visual arts. People just painting, carving, drawing, and laughing all the while. There are movies and photographs of such people, but they seem far from real so many years later. This is where music recorded so many years earlier has a definite edge. It is still real. It resonates. In fact, it makes blood flow. The faded movies or photographs of so-called primitive peoples making art are just that. Primitive to boot. Nothing left to them. Those caught by the camera in black-and-white look nearly dead. Nay, outright phony. In this respect at least, hearing beats seeing by a wide margin. A great pity for the visual arts, to be sure. Well, a great pity for us all.
