It is stunning that the German word for “frontier” or “border,” grenze, has been passed on to many a Slavic language as granica. Its variations only slight, it stretches across the Slavic world all the way to Russia. In short, the nomadic Slavs had no notion of frontiers or borders. Interestingly, there is another word with a similar propensity to spread across the Slavic world. It is the German word for “slave”: sklave. It, too, has united the former nomads from Asia forever. And in name. Even more interestingly, these two words work wonderfully together, for what is a slave without a frontier or border.
