GRANDPARENTS (July 10, 2012)

How long does it take people to forget essential lessons learned? Two generations. Grandparents’ experiences are nigh irrelevant by now. Look at the Great Depression. Look at World War II. Experiences of these momentous events in recent history are reduced to a few books and movies at best. The Industrial Revolution has sped things up to such an extent that grandparents have become nobodies. It was different throughout most of history, not to mention prehistory. Grandparents used to matter. They were consulted. Their experiences were invaluable. Across most of the world, this was only three or four generations ago. Which perhaps explains the quagmire that was the Twentieth Century. As for the Twenty-First, even parents’ experiences are becoming nigh irrelevant. Only imagine the consequences.
