GOOGLE ANALYTICS BE DAMNED (March 6, 2012)
As of the beginning of this year, I am doing my best to control my urge to check how well I am doing on Google Analytics. It takes quite some effort, too. After so many years, the habit is hard to beat. But I remember my enthusiasm about the service not so long ago (“Homage to Google Analytics,” December 31, 2010). Such feelings are unimaginable today, though. Google Analytics be damned, instead. I can imagine that the service is a godsend for many a commercial website, but it is entirely different in my case. Although I am offering paintings and books for sale on my Ca’ Bon Gallery site, I am not about money at all. My Residua site is central to my life, but it has nothing to do with commercial activity of any kind. Quite the opposite, as a matter of fact. The site is, as it were, spiritual. So, why should I care how many visitors I have attracted? Or how many pages they have visited? Even the search words or phrases are ultimately a mere bore, for most visitors only search for their own names. Anyhow, I hope to shake the bad habit in a few months. If and when I check how well I am doing on Google Analytics, at least I will be surprised by the results.
