Eight years ago on this day we signed our own marriage certificate (“Marriage Certificate,” February 27, 2004). And I feel kind of proud of ourselves. We are married in utter oblivion of the state and the church. We recognize neither. It is up to us alone to recognize our own selves as the only relevant authorities concerning our lives. Our love is all we need. Robust in our outlook, we will celebrate our anniversary without any hoopla. There is no need for it. A quiet day for a quiet decision and so many years in between. Good years, too.
