GOOD OLD SOCIALISM (March 20, 2012)
The weather has been wonderful for weeks, and the pedestrian area in the center of Zagreb has been crammed. During the day, there is hardly a table to be gotten in so many outdoor cafés. Everyone is out there to see and to be seen. But this is only one half of the story. Ever since the weather has turned balmy, the construction workers have been all over the pedestrian area, as well. For some reason, which remains entirely mysterious to me, they are digging up the streets and squares. Jackhammers are pounding, bulldozers are roaring, and trucks are carting all sorts of things hither and thither. There is no sign of construction past the working hours, though. Which smacks of good old socialism. The construction workers come first and foremost in the minds of city authorities. They are not to be inconvenienced during the winter. God forbid. And they are sacrosanct at night. In the bargain, they get to watch and comment the eager beauties that forever roam the pedestrian area of the Croatian capital. Good old socialism, indeed. What is even more interesting, no-one ever complains about the abomination, either. In short, the bungling city authorities are right on target.
