GOOD NEIGHBORS (July 17, 2012)

I was checking the plant by my front door when Nada Tarandek’s car trundled down Borgo. I wanted to ask her for the name of the plant that Josipa Valenta, known to all as Pina, had planted there several months ago (“The Good Neighbor,” April 7, 2012). Nada lives two houses down from me, and Pina lives one house further down the street. As it turned out, Pina was in the car with Nada. Nada must have taken Pina to some chore of hers. I greeted them both. “What’s the name of this plant?” I asked when Nada stopped the car by my door. “We call it cactus,” Pina said, “but I don’t know its real name.” I turned to Nada and pointed first at the plant and then at Pina: “She planted it!” Pina just shrugged her shoulders. “Let everyone live as it best suits them,” she muttered and raised her hands. Tears came to my eyes as I reached for her gnarled hand. She responded in kind. “All right,” Nada laughed and let go of the brake. I waved after them before I entered my house and wiped off my tears.
