There is little of interest one can read today about Angela Merkel’s quick visit to Greece yesterday. What was the German chancellor doing there, anyhow? Was the visit about German-Greek friendship, as Der Spiegel maintains? Or was it about the most powerful woman in Europe reassuring the embattled Greeks, as The Guardian hints? Given that Germany is Europe and that Merkel is Frau Europa at this juncture, this is a moot point. The riotous reception in Athens is surely about both Germany and Europe. The Greeks have had enough of either. And so have the Spaniards, the Portuguese, and perhaps even the Italians. Had she visited the capitals of any of these countries instead, the reception would have been on the riotous side, as well. Will she make a few more quick visits to such distraught places, though? That is the question that she must be struggling with at the moment. Poor Frau Europa, indeed. Would that she were the German chancellor only.
