FLEETING HAPPINESS (October 5, 2012)
The Zagreb Film Festival is about to start. As it happens, I know many people who have been running it for years. Literally. From day to day, I see them dashing around on all sorts of petty chores—arranging the transport of a piano that will be needed on the opening night, buying balloons that symbolize this year’s festival, hiring additional furniture for several big parties, distributing posters advertising the event. As I write, some of them are being interviewed by a television crew in front of the café attached to the cinema that hosts the festival. All of a sudden, they are in the limelight themselves. I wave at them from time to time, and they wave back with big smiles plastered on their faces, but we all get serious when the camera starts rolling. Although I will never see the footage on television, let alone the festival that they have organized in concert, I am enjoying the unexpected show tremendously. How little it takes, as my mother would say! Fleeting happiness of people you know, albeit not too well.
