I had a Yugoslav passport through 1992, when I took a Croatian passport. It expired in 2002, and I renewed it in time. I got a British passport in 1995, and I renewed it in 2005. In Zagreb, of all places. I had two passports for quite a while. No longer, though. My Croatian passport expired at the end of last month, but I decided not to renew it ever again. And why would I? My British passport will serve me well in Croatia, which is due to join the European Union in 2013. Anyhow, I feel kind of jubilant for letting my Croatian passport expire. It will take me some time to get rid of all other Croatian documents, such as the identity card, but I am on the right track already. I wish to cut all my ties with Croatia as soon as possible, but my house in Motovun is the main impediment in this endeavor. It is now rooted in Croatian soil in spite of its long history in the Venetian Republic, the Napoleonic interregnum, the Austro-Hungarian empire, Italy between the world wars, and Yugoslavia. Just like my Croatian passport, they all expired one after another. Time is undoubtedly on my side.
