DOUBLE PERIPHERY (May 7, 2012)
Croatian newspapers are pitiful at their very best, but it is amazing to browse through the coverage of yesterday’s elections in France, Greece, and Serbia in their online editions today. France and Serbia get some notice, but Greece is almost completely neglected even by the leading newspapers in the country. The connection between the rowdy Greek elections and the wobbly future of the euro seems to be entirely lost on the newspapers. Not to mention the connection between the rowdy euro and the wobbly future of the European Union itself, of course. For crying out loud, even I am astonished. And after so many years of being astonished over and over again. What does this say about the future of Croatia, though? Judging by its newspapers, the country is destined to remain on the periphery of European affairs, which are destined to remain on the periphery of world affairs. Double periphery, to put it simply. An enviable achievement, no doubt.
