DEMENTIA FOR BEGINNERS (September 16, 2012)
As of late, there is much talk about dementia in the press. A quick search through the World Wide Web is enough to understand why. After cancer, it is considered to be the second leading health problem around the globe. As the world population ages, these are growing threats, as well. The incidence of dementia is expected to double every twenty years. By mid-century, more than a hundred-million victims are expected around the globe. Two thirds of them will live in low- and middle-income countries, though. The poorer the country, the greater number of dementia victims is expected. Still, high-income countries will be far from spared. Millions of dementia victims are expected even in the richest countries in Europe, North America, and the South Pacific. And there is little if anything one can do about it, for there are many different types and causes of dementia. All this said, one would hope that one would be spared from dementia. If not, there is always hope that one would also be struck by cancer. The misery would thus be both softened and shortened, of course. A double whammy, my ass.
