ARBEIT MACHT FRAU (October 23, 2012)

I was over the moon this evening when this phrase popped up in my mind. Just like that. Out of the blue. “Work makes woman,” that is. Gorgeous. It should be the rallying call of modern capitalism, for it is women who are at its foundations. Obedient, hard working, agreeable, rule bound, submissive, diligent, child hardened, meticulous, and forever obliging, they do as they are told. More or less. And they rebel rarely, if ever. But I was dismayed when I searched the phrase on the World Wide Web a moment ago. Actually, I was angry. Nay, livid. For crying out loud, you can buy a T-shirt with these very words already. For a pittance, too. At any rate, it was wonderful feeling like a genius even for a short while. Auschwitz be praised.
