A SIGN OF MATURITY (June 6, 2012)
Central Zagreb is packed this evening. Tomorrow is a national holiday, but few people know which. Most could not care less, anyway. A sign of maturity, or what?
Addendum (June 7, 2012)
Ooops! It is the Eucharist or Corpus Christi today. It always sneaks up on me, among many others in Croatia. This is far from a mean holiday, either. Having read about it on the World Wide Web, though, I am none the wiser. To the best of my understanding, it has to do with the flesh and blood of Christ, which are consumed at the end of each and every mass in the shape of bread and wine. Cannibalism incarnate, as it were. Catholic to boot, this national holiday is of rather recent vintage in Croatia. Twenty years, say. Judging by the crowds milling around central Zagreb at church time, it will take it many more years to take root. Flesh and blood, anyone?
