A FRESH GOLF CAMPAIGN IN CROATIA (July 4, 2012)
As the Croatian newspapers report, the Croatian minister of tourism, Veljko Ostojić, is starting a fresh golf campaign. Surprise, surprise. Coming from Istria, he has long been the right hand man of Ivan Jakovčić, the governor of Istria, and the greatest golf aficionado in Croatia after Ivan Sanader, the former prime minister. All the old arguments for golf are thus coming back. And in earnest. Of course, there is nothing wrong with golf as such. Properly built golf courses could indeed be appealing to tourist with money. Also, this could extend the tourist season. As ever, the trouble is with excessive development in hope of quick profit, and that is why greens of all sorts are against the vaunted sport. Returning to Ostojić, he seems to have forgotten that golf development in Croatia was a part of the global real-estate boom. The boom is long over, though. Finding money for golf development will be a bitch. Good luck, mister minister!
