A FEW SIMPLE WORDS (January 16, 2012)

My beloved’s apartment is sparse. In addition to the entrance hall, kitchen, bathroom, and a couple of auxiliary rooms, there are three large rooms connected by enormous doors. The ceiling is high and the walls are nearly white. The pale bamboo floors are bare. There are only a few pieces of furniture, and all of them are of simple geometric forms. The lighting fixtures are the same. Most of the pictures on the walls display nothing but rudimentary geometry, as well. There are no curtains. The ribbed radiators under the windows only add to the geometric austerity of everything in sight, which makes the place look much bigger than it actually is. Although I am quite used to the apartment after several years, every now and then I suddenly take note of its ascetic looks. Surprised once again, I come to a halt at a door to marvel at the way we live. Often enough I am overcome by a desire to record what I see, and I reach for my mobile phone, which is equipped with a pretty good camera. That is what had just happened to me a moment ago. And then it crossed my mind that a few simple words are always far superior to any picture I can come up with. Or anyone else, for that matter.
