A DOUBLE WHAMMY (April 3, 2012)
The draught has been so bad in Istria the last few months that many in and around Motovun have been eagerly awaiting rain. Without it, there will be little wine, olive oil, and fruits, which feed quite a number of people in these parts. According to the weather forecasts, rain will finally come just before Easter. However, Easter is the beginning of the tourist season, and many in the hilltown depend on tourism, as well. All things considered, rain is most welcome in spite of Easter. The more, the merrier. Today is the first day when rain has been expected. And it has come, albeit as the lightest of drizzles. The danger that now lurks is that the drizzle will drive away the tourists without properly watering the fields. A double whammy. Most people I meet in Motovun just shake their heads as they glance at the sky. “C’mon,” you can almost hear them.
