A BIKINI TOP (July 20, 2012)

As I sit alone on the hotel terrace in mid-afternoon, a girl of about seven appears at the hotel door. She is wearing a short skirt and a bikini top. Soon she goes back inside, and I start laughing. And laughing. To my amusement, I cannot stop laughing for a long while. Bursts of uncontrollable laughter come upon me over and over again. A bikini top! A girl of seven! And then the girl reappears together with her middle-aged parents and a sister around a year her junior. She, too, is wearing a short skirt and a bikini top. To the best of my reckoning, she cannot be more than six. All of a sudden, I stop laughing. In fact, I cannot even imagine why I have laughed so much a moment before. A girl of six! What I have witnessed is not funny at all. It is dreadful, no less. Nay, it is monstrous, and no two ways about it.
