“WHY CAPITALISM HAS AN IMAGE PROBLEM” (July 29, 2012)
Thus The Wall Street Journal today. Someone from the newspaper’s trusted crew is examining a cloud that now hangs over American business, as well as what can be done about it. Nothing to worry about, though. Now that socialism has become history, capitalism’s image problem is a child’s play. At least in the medium run. Not even the coming depression will tarnish it in any significant way. With the possible exception of feudalism that is already lurking in the shadows. Forever in search of strong leaders, the so-called silent majority will clamor ever more loudly for kings and queens of yesteryear. The bungling bourgeoisie will eventually need to defend its turf against enemies of old. All by itself, the market will scarcely suffice. But that image problem can safely be forgotten for the time being. The march to posthistory has barely begun. Sleep tight, moneybags.
