“THUS A…” (April 28, 2012)

Many years ago I started writing pieces whose titles quoted something I had seen written somewhere, like on a wall or on a T-shirt. “Thus a…,” are the first words of them all. The very quote in the title is central to all pieces of this ilk. But I have long noticed that some of the titles of such pieces bear quotation marks while the others do not. Whether or not to use the quotation marks is apparently left to chance. And this has been bothering me as of late. I even thought of coming up with a strict rule concerning the quotation marks and changing all the pieces written over the years accordingly. I have just decided against such a rule, though. And against changing so many titles of pieces written over so many years. As well as against any rules regarding such pieces in the future. A little bit of inconsistency is but a welcome addition to my writings. Nay, an ornament. Thus this piece and its moronic title. The titles of all the pieces starting with these words will sometimes bear quotation marks, and sometimes they will not. Strict rules be damned. For crying out loud, chance deserves a better chance!
