“THE MASSACRE IN A MOVIE THEATER” (July 21, 2012)

Thus The New York Times opens its Letters Section today. “The shooting in Aurora, Colorado, brings calls for increased regulation of handguns,” adds the newspaper. Indeed, most letters to the editor are adamant about the need for better gun control. The National Rifle Association is mentioned in almost every letter as the main culprit. Guns do not make us safer, the argument goes, but less so. Top politicians are thus invited to provide the right kind of legislation as soon as possible. But it is easy to show that James Holmes, who killed more than ten people and wounded around sixty a couple of days ago, would not be stopped by better gun control. Just remember Anders Behring Breivik, who recently killed nearly eighty people and wounded more than thirty in Norway, of all places. This is a country with gun controls so tough that America can never hope to come even close to them. A much better way to deal with mass murderers like Breivik and Holmes is to have properly trained armed guards in places where they are likely to strike. One true shot can stop a massacre.
