Thus the title of a new book by a certain Hanna Rosin, who is in the limelight across the so-called west at the moment. The subtitle is even more to the point: “And the Rise of Women.” According to several book reviews I have skimmed, she is looking into a wide variety of economic indicators that point at men’s decline: participation in the workforce, share of university students, participation in growing job categories, and so on. And the final verdict is that men do not adapt well. But the reviews I have skimmed through fail to come up with one simple question that follows from the above claim: what precisely is it that men do not adapt to so well? The answer is straightforward: today’s capitalism. Indeed, women are better at conforming, pretending, revising, conniving, meandering, coping, amending, kowtowing, reworking, playacting, following, muddling through, and the like. Far better, as Rosin rightly argues. Which is why they have rarely if ever been at the forefront of any revolution. As for the next revolution, which today’s capitalism surely calls for, you can safely skip the book about the rise of women. Pace Joan of Arc.
