“THE CASE FOR THE CITY-STATE” (July 14, 2012)
Thus The Wall Street Journal today. “Ancient Greece and Renaissance Italy provide a model for economic dynamism that modern-day Europe could use,” the newspaper explains. Among Greek city-states, Athens, Corinth, and Thebes are mentioned in the article. As for the Renaissance Italy, Florence, Milan, Genoa, and Venice are in the forefront of the argument. Anyhow, my interest was not aroused by these bright examples of cooperation and competition. Rather, I was fascinated by one of the early plugs for feudalism in our own time. Indeed, feudalism is the future, and city-states provide a model of some value not only for Europe, but for America and Asia, as well. Forget about capitalism, that is. Let us learn from history, and especially from its golden pages. The argument will soon be extended to even older models, no doubt. Forget about feudalism, too. The regress gets ever more glorious, to be sure. But let us not rush things at this stage. Slavery can wait for the time being. The case for the city-state is just what we need at the moment.
