“THE ARTIST” (February 27, 2012)

Thus the title of a black-and-out movie about a silent-era movie star coming to terms with the arrival of “talkies.” It is all over the media at the moment as it just received Hollywood awards for the best picture, best director, best writer (actually, “creator”), best actor, and best costume design. Wow! I am not impressed by the movie, though. It is but a trite stunt to celebrate Hollywood itself. What I am impressed about is the title of the movie. Early in the Twenty-First Century, the actor is the artist. Period. All other artists can eat their hearts out. To be sure, they are hardly artists any longer.
