“SHARES FIRM AS EUROPE FEARS EASE” (September 28, 2012)
Thus the Financial Times today. “Sentiment improves on Spanish economic reforms,” the newspaper explains pithily. This is one of the best examples of stockmarket humor, it goes without saying. For Spain is actually up shit creek, as a quick look at Spanish output, employment, national debt, and international trade figures can testify. Besides, the country is facing ever-fiercer social unrest against the economic reforms so lavishly lauded. Humor is humor, though. When it comes to stockmarket humor, peculiar as it is in its unparalleled dryness, the newspaper in question is among the best. Which is why I recommend it most highly. For a quick laugh, take a peek at its online edition any time of day. Gems like the article about Spanish economic reforms pop up often enough to make the effort well worth the while. Enjoy!
Addendum (September 29, 2012)
For the proof of the joke, just check where the stockmarkets ended up yesterday afternoon. Deep in the red, of course. So much for Spanish economic reforms. As well as for “Europe” fears. But this is stockmarket humor at its very best. It cannot last longer than a day, if that long. But my advice still holds. The Financial Times is always ready to oblige with a joke or two. While the humor lasts, enjoy it to the hilt!
