As Pamuk argues, Turkey’s accession to the European Union has become so implausible that neither side talks about it any longer. Lively debates on both sides have petered out for good. Christians and Muslims appear to be forever divided. And Europe is turning out to be squarely Christian. As well as conservative to boot. But the most surprising thing about the article by the Turkish writer of renown and a Nobel laureate is that he does not propose anything. He just states how things are at this juncture. He knows that this is how things will most likely stay, as well. And this is what I actually like about the article. Here we are. Cheerio.
