“EURO CRISIS WILL LINGER, MERKEL SAYS” (December 16, 2012)
Thus The Wall Street Journal today. “German chancellor Angela Merkel warned her European colleagues against premature optimism that the eurozone debt crisis has been tamed,” elaborates the newspaper, “and urged leaders to stay the course on economic and fiscal policy reforms.” Brava! But is all of this not obvious to the so-called leaders in question? Do they need aunt Angela to explain things in terms so painfully plain? Most important, is Europe not capable of anything but a bunch of napping nephews when it comes to economics? Anyhow, the article is a sufficient slap in their face. With an aunt and her nephews at the helm, the euro crisis will surely linger for a long time. Assuming the common currency remains afloat for that long, it goes without saying.
